Joan Picó Planas (Barcelona 1978) is a digital artist specializing in the creation of large-scale and complex 3D environments using procedural modeling and distribution techniques.
He studied Systems Analysis (CENEC 1997), 3D and digital video techniques (Fak d'Art 1997 - 2002).
In 2023, he completed the professional certificate SSCE0110 - Docència de formació per a l’ocupació.
In 2024, the Servei d’Acreditació de Competències Professionals awarded him the corresponding units of competence for the certificates IS2076-3 Animació 2D i 3D, ISMV0209 Desenvolupament de productes multimèdia interactius and IMSV0109 Muntatge i postproducció d’obres audiovisuals.
He produced his first short film "The Worm" (2nd prize at the first StripArt festival) in 1997.
Two years later he would co-produce with Llucià Riba and David Tugués the short film "2.0", winner of the Malaga Animation Festival and the Lleida Animac Festival.
With the same team and together with the Lagares brothers, he would produce in 2000 the short film "Los Girasoles", winner of the Goya Award for best animated short film. It is considered the first short film in the world to mix traditional stop motion animation with 3D.
Also with Llucià Riba and David Tugués they would create the interactive installation "Aérea" (2002), where using data and photographs from the Catalan Institute of Cartography, they virtually recreated a flight over what would be Barcelona in 2004, with the changes planned for the Forum de les Cultures.
Later, in 2010 and together with Marta Pujol and Vincenzo Mengale he co-produced and co-directed the online television channel RadioChangoTV.
With Vincenzo Mengale he has designed and implemented a multitude of websites over the years.
Since 2014 he has collaborated with the studio of the graphic designer Enric Huguet, carrying out tasks of digitization and digital restoration of originals. This collaboration lasted until Enric's death in 2024.
In 2017, on the occasion of the opening of Ferrari Land, he coordinated, together with the advertising agency RKPeople, the creation of the interactive map of PortAventura, which included the most important attractions modeled in 3D, as well as navigation through the space like Google Maps.
For more than 26 years he has worked not only as a 3D artist, digital video editor-producer and web designer, but also as a producer and editorial designer, and graphic and corporate designer.
Currently and since 2019 he has been working as a teacher of 3D, video and digital skills.
Joan is co-founder and president of the non-profit association "A través del Mirall", dedicated to the dissemination, creation and use of Art by vulnerable groups or at risk of social exclusion.
He is also a member of the hardcore band "The Suekas", as well as the electronic music band "Llimac".
